I Would Like To Thank The Academy...

The Oscars are the highlight of the year: my version of the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup all rolled into one. I adore everything about the Oscars: the Swarovski stage, the host, the speeches, the movies and (most importantly) the red carpet. The red carpet makes history and dictates trends for seasons to come. There are always some fashion hits (amen Jessica Chastain 2013 in Armani….and 2012 McQueen while we’re at it!) and some misses (two words: swan dress). But let’s be honest…we live for those misses. There were also a lot of great accessory and make-up trends that were inspired by the runway trends.

Accessories can make or break any red carpet outfit. For the Oscars, it was all about neutral/ metallic clutches, strappy minimal heels, statement earrings and necklaces. Some statement standout pieces included Cate Blanchett in her Tiffany and Co. turquoise masterpiece of a necklace and Margot Robbie in her historic Van Cleef and Arpels necklace. Even the men were getting in on this trend (cue John Travolta’s chain necklace - those are words I never thought I would say ekkk!). But for the most part, clutches were kept to a minimal metallic and shoes were simple and strappy. Somewhere Stuart Weitzman is cheering with joy because 7 celebrities walked the red carpet last night wearing his legendary “nudist” style. Dear Mother Nature: lets warm up a bit so we can wear these, shall we?!

Make up trends were very similar to the accessories: mostly minimal with pops of bold colour. My neutral red carpet picks include: Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Chastain. They kept it clean and let their natural beauty shine through. I loved how Felicity Jones, Margot Robbie and Dakota Johnson added some pop with either a smoky eye or bold lip. So much so that I tried the bold lip look today…ok maybe I was secretly hoping to seduce Mr. Grey with it (note to self: it didn’t work). But enough with make-up and accessories….on to the main course…the dresses!!

There were two groups that I loved: the minimalists and the sparklers. Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent, Reese Witherspoon in Tom Ford and Rosamund Pike in Givenchy completely blew my mind. All three were head-to-toe perfection. But let’s be honest…I love my sparkle…so naturally I was attracted to the knock-me-over couture creations. Felicity Jones in McQueen (that colour..that fabric!) Jennifer Aniston in Versace (take that Brad Pitt!), Emma Stone in Elie Saab (mic drop) and Julianne Moore in Chanel (she was already a winner when she stepped on to the carpet). All of these ladies brought their A-games and completely wowed me. It was a fantastic ending to a fantastic red carpet season.

XOXO, JP
